This painting was created in solidarity of the #BlackLivesMatter movement

“It’s my face man. I didn’t do nothing serious man. Please. Please. Please I can’t breathe. Please man. Please somebody. Please man I can’t breathe. I will.. I can’t move.. mama.. mama.. I can’t, my knee. Please.. please.. I can’t breathe officer. Don’t kill me. They gon’ kill me. They gon’ kill me. I can’t breathe. Please sir.. please.. I can’t breathe”.

These were George Floyd’s last words before his pleas ended forever. Feel the pain, fear, and innocence behind these words. 8 minutes and 46 seconds of wondering what he has done to lose his life like this. Was it his choice to be born dark skinned? No, but it was certainly another human being’s choice to discriminate against this beautiful colour. When will the time come when human beings realise that everyone, fair and dark skinned alike, would be buried 6 feet under the moment we are gone? What is the kind of satisfaction that human beings receive from committing such heinous acts? From what justifiable stance is dark skinned considered “dirty”? This has to end. We did not choose the colour of our skin when we were born, but right now, we do have a choice to lead a life with respect and equality in how we treat every single person on this earth. Everyone deserves to live with zero insecurities, instead of waking up with the fear that this day might be your last, simply due to the fact that you have a different skin colour. Read that again and let it sink in how ridiculous it sounds. If you discriminate and hate against dark skin, remember this, you have allowed your heart to be the darkest of all. Sleep well, George. Everyone is just starting to wake up.

REMINDER: This story is a realistic fictional narrative, however certain elements and the context in which the story takes place is based on true factual information and inspiration drawn from the headlines.
